Everglades Restoration Plan Approved by House

WASHINGTON -- The House approved a historic project Thursday to reverse decades of environmental damage to the Everglades, one of the nation's most endangered natural areas.

The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan was part of a wide-ranging bill authorizing dozens of federal water projects. The House vote was 394-14. The Senate approved the bill 85-1 in September.

But because the House made some changes in the bill unrelated to the Everglades measure, it now goes to a conference committee. That panel is expected to resolve the differences within a few days and send the bill to President Clinton, who has indicated he will sign it.

"It's a great day for America and a great day for Florida," said Rep. E. Clay Shaw Jr., a Republican from Fort Lauderdale who sponsored the House bill.
