LaMar/Mercury Grand Slam captures big hits with fishing and weather Third Annual celebrity pro-am fishing tournament on Tampa Bay is again a huge success for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation
hit for a grand slam of fish to win the thirdannual Chuck LaMar/Mercury Outboards Grand Slam, a celebrity fishing tournamenton Tampa Bay. The Boston Red Sox veteran, fishing with Capt. James Goodwin,Palm Harbor, Fla., caught a 27-3/4 snook followed by a 26-1/2 redfish and a 15-1/2 trout to beat out some 45 other celebrities in the pro-am catch, photograph and release fishing tournament to raise money for the PediatricCancer Foundation. Wakefields total was 69-3/4. James was a great captain and put us on fish both days, said an excited Wakefield, holding a huge bronze-sculpted trophy of the three tournament species in a mangrove setting. Former Pittsburgh Steelers captain and lineman Gary Dunn, Islamorada, Fla., who came up just three inches short in total inches with his biggest trio of species, caught the only other grand slam. James B. Sikking, Los Angeles, Calif., caught the largest redfish of the tournament at 29. The popular actor (3Hill Street Blues, Doogie Houser, MD and Pelican Brief) won the celebrity category with the redfish as well, guided by Capt. Wayne Shuff, Plant City, Fla. Former NY Mets and Chicago Cubs slugger Dave Kingman, Lake Tahoe, Nev., fishing with Capt. Doug Fisher, Riverview,Fla., brought in the largest snook in the celebrity division at 27.5. Former Philadelphia Phillies Von Hayes,Tierra Verde, Fla., guided by Capt. Wade Osborne, Tampa, Fla., had the largest trout among the celebs at 22. In the angler division Bryan Cook, St. Petersburg, and Will Robinson, Tampa, were the big winners. Cook, fishing with Capt. Mike Palmer,Tampa, caught a 36 snook the first day and held the lead for the two days for the biggest overall trophy as well. Robinson, fishing with Capt. Robert Gorta, St. Petersburg, won with the biggest trout of the tournament at 23-1/2. Bill Rice, Tampa, won the angler division with a 27 redfish guided by Capt. George Jonah, Tampa. There was no overall winner with a grand slam of fish in the angler division of some 90 fishermen. Fishing together Bob Gilhooley, Chicago, Ill., and Jonathan Wexler, Denver, Colo., both scored the only fish caught on fly with Capt. Tom Mohler, Pinellas Park, Fla. Gilhooley caught a 24 redfish and Wexler won by catching an 18 trout. The weekend also included the Steve Yerrid Kids Fishing Derby, an annual event within the tournament for young cancer survivors to fish on the Vinoy Renaissance docks with celebrities and guides. It warms your heart and brings tears to your eyesto see these children, many of them fishing for the first time, getting assists from so many caring adults and sports stars, said tournament director Bill Miller. Dates for the fourth annual event have been set for November 9 11, 2001. The tournament is named for honorary chairman ChuckLaMar, the general manager and avid angler of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and for title sponsor Mercury Marine, world-wide builder of Mercury Outboards. Other top level sponsors included Mako Marine, MercedesU.S.A., Outback Steakhouse, eAngler, HealthScreen America Bay Pines Marina,DuPont Registry and Florida Progress. Totals were not in on monies raised from sponsors,angler entries, auctions and donations but was expected to reach nearly $200,000 for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and its work in the Tampa Bay area for children's cancer research.
